In the exhibition “Coming to Stone”, Shani Weiss presents paintings of scorched earth — remnants of an intense event marked by physical fire or an inner, subconscious blaze. The images appear carved in stone, like cave paintings of an undeciphered culture. One may imagine that everything is made of stone and painted upon stone. The stone becomes the spring, the water, and the light — and also the very substance from which the pigment of the painting is made. At times, Weiss’s brush seems to carve, dig, and chisel, and at others, to mold clay.
