What?

The Maya Gallery is a public interest institution (Malcar), a non-profit founded in 2018 by established Israeli artists Michael Kovner and Avner Levinson. The two are from different generations but share a passion for art and art education. Together with Dan Traub, former Deputy Director of Resource Development at Bank Otzar Hahayal, they founded Amutat Maya (Maya Foundation). Their vision: to create a place that would respond to the need of art and culture lovers to see and experience high-quality art; to present emerging artists; and to create a safe space for multifaceted art and culture. Maya Gallery is run by a team of volunteers and employees.

Over only four years since its founding, and thanks to the significant support by Friends of Maya Gallery and the nearly 100 excellent artists who have exhibited there, Maya Gallery is now firmly established as a focal point of events and interest on the contemporary Israeli art scene, and has been officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality.

Maya Gallery serves as a unique platform for the following:

Supporting emerging artists by providing a proper, distinguished space for exhibiting their art and by publishing catalogs. Up to now, Maya Gallery has published 25 catalogs for young artists

Exhibiting artists from Israel’s social and geographic periphery

Facilitating inter-generational dialogue between artists from different generations through group and collaborative exhibitions

Providing a platform for artists who are no longer with us

Hosting dance and music events, talks, lectures, and festive openings

Why?

Art is a necessary and important component of every civilized society. A society without art lacks meaning, and is thus destined to dissolve. The integration of spirit and action, of cultural and economic production, forms the key to a healthy, enterprising and productive society. We believe in the ability of art and creative production to enhance individual and community resilience and empowerment. We consider the development of workshops for children from peripheral sectors of society, and bringing them closer to making art to be of the highest importance.
